System not working
Why does an HVAC system keep starting and stopping?
Understand short cycling and the observations that help a technician investigate it.
What short cycling means
Short cycling describes repeated brief operating cycles rather than sustained operation. The pattern matters alongside whether the home reaches the thermostat setting. There is no single cycle length that diagnoses every system: weather, equipment and controls affect how a system runs.
Several issues can look similar
Restricted airflow, control problems, equipment sizing and system faults can contribute to repeated cycling. The visible symptom does not identify which part has failed. Repeatedly changing thermostat settings or replacing parts without a diagnosis can make the pattern harder to assess.
What to tell Prince
Note whether heating or cooling is affected, approximately how long the equipment runs, the thermostat setting and room temperature, and when the pattern began. Mention recent service or equipment changes. Request a diagnostic visit and ask about its fee. Leave electrical, refrigerant and internal equipment work to a qualified technician.
