Where to start with home energy use
Look at the home and the equipment together before choosing an upgrade.
Gather a useful baseline
Compare energy use over similar seasons, noting thermostat habits, occupancy and changes to the home. A higher bill alone does not identify an HVAC fault.
Discuss the building as well as the system
Ask whether air leakage, insulation or ductwork should be assessed alongside the equipment. Replacing a unit does not address every source of discomfort.
Keep expectations specific
Ask what a proposed improvement is intended to solve and how it will be evaluated. Savings vary; avoid treating a general percentage as a promise for your home.
